Hyperparathyroidism Symptoms Checklist

Hyperparathyroidism Symptoms ChecklistHyperparathyroidism can be a difficult disease to diagnose due to its symptoms being subtle, gradual, and easy to attribute to different conditions. While some with hyperparathyroidism will be able to notice symptoms within the first year, others may not notice any apparent symptoms for several years.  It is important for those who suspect they have hyperparathyroidism to understand some of the telling signs and symptoms so that they can be accurately diagnosed and treated.

What Is Hyperparathyroidism?

Hyperparathyroidism occurs when one or more of the parathyroid glands becomes overactive and produces too much of the parathyroid hormone. Most cases of hyperparathyroidism are caused by a benign parathyroid tumor that is causing the gland to become abnormal and overproduce the parathyroid hormone. The only function of the parathyroid gland is to regulate the level of calcium in the body and the continuous overproduction of the parathyroid hormone leads to abnormal calcium levels. Calcium affects every cell in the body, so eventually the high levels of calcium take a physical toll on the body.

Signs and Symptoms of Hyperparathyroidism

There are five bodily systems that can be affected by hyperparathyroidism and high levels of calcium. Patients should look for the following signs and symptoms:

  • Neuro-psychiatric – Patients with hyperparathyroidism may start to feel more tired, forgetful, anxious, and even depressed. Many patients have reported feeling like they are in a fog and have a hard time focusing.
  • Musculo-skeletal – If left untreated, hyperparathyroidism will lead to osteoporosis. Other musculo-skeletal symptoms are muscle weakness, bone pain, and fractures.
  • Gastro-Intestinal – Hyperparathyroidism can cause patients to experience abdominal pain and constipation. Patients may also develop peptic ulcers or acute pancreatitis.
  • Renal – When calcium levels in the body are too high, the body will oftentimes get rid of it through the urine. Patients with hyperparathyroidism often experience frequent urination as well as unusual nighttime urination. Without realizing it, some patients also develop kidney stones as a result of the disease.
  • Cardiac – The heart is also affected by hyperparathyroidism and patients with it can experience high blood pressure and heart palpitations.

What is the Best Treatment for Hyperparathyroidism?

It is important that patients with hyperparathyroidism are accurately diagnosed. Unfortunately, many patients are misdiagnosed due to the symptoms of the disease being attributed to another condition. It is important for patients to seek medical attention from a parathyroid expert.

At the CENTER for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery in Beverly Hills, Dr. Larian is committed to first accurately diagnosing patients and then providing them with the most innovative treatments available. For qualified patients, Dr. Larian can perform a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy to remove the parathyroid tumor that is causing the gland to act abnormally. Dr. Larian is a pioneer of this innovative technique and patients report feeling an immediate improvement in their health soon after the surgery.
