Can Medicine Cure Parathyroid Disease?

Recovering From Parathyroid SurgeryThose diagnosed with parathyroid disease typically have questions regarding the best form of treatment for their hyperparathyroidism. Patients at the CENTER for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery in Beverly Hills may wonder if a prescribed medication can alleviate the symptoms of their parathyroid disease. Unlike other diseases, parathyroid disease cannot be cured with medication. Board-certified head and neck surgeon Dr. Larian is a parathyroid expert who is able to recommend and perform the most effective and cutting-edge treatments to patients suffering from parathyroid disease.

What Causes Parathyroid Disease?

The parathyroid glands are located in the neck and are responsible for regulating the level of calcium in the body through the production of parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid disease develops from overactive parathyroid glands. When one or more of the four parathyroid glands becomes abnormal, they produce too much parathyroid hormone. The abnormal parathyroid gland will continue to produce parathyroid hormone, regardless of the level of calcium in the body. This leads to a calcium imbalance which can cause problems with the bones, muscles, nervous system, and internal organs. Most often, parathyroid disease is caused by a benign tumor in the parathyroid glands. As long as the tumor is still in place, the disease cannot be cured.

What are the Symptoms of Parathyroid Disease?

Many patients will not notice the immediate symptoms of parathyroid disease or they may mistakenly attribute it to another condition.  Most people with parathyroid disease will feel lethargic, weak, easily agitated, and may have trouble sleeping.  It is inevitable that all patients with parathyroid disease will eventually develop osteoporosis as the calcium levels in the body continue to be unmonitored. Even if patients don’t feel the physical symptoms right away, osteoporosis will set in over time.

What Is the Best Treatment for Parathyroid Disease?

There is currently no medication that can cure parathyroid disease. Medication will not counteract the overproduction of parathyroid hormone and the tumor causing the disease must be removed. At the CENTER for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery in Beverly Hills, Dr. Larian performs the minimally invasive parathyroidectomy in order to remove tumors that cause parathyroid disease. This revolutionary procedure has several advantages over the traditional parathyroid surgery, including a smaller incision, less pain, shorter operation time, and less recovery time. Expert parathyroid surgeon Dr. Larian is committed to utilizing the most advanced procedures in order to achieve amazing results for his patients. Treatment for hyperparathyroidism with medications has proven to be not as effective as surgery, and is limited to use for those patients that are too ill to have surgery.
